Aren Maeir and Israeli researchers make beer from the time of the PharoahsIsraeli researchers have succeeded in making a beer similar to that drunk by the Pharoahs over 3000 years ago. They were successful in extracting yeast from ancient jars used for making beer. This is a first thanks to the work of three universities.

The beer was made using ancient ingredients. The scientists found the yeast at the bottom of jars discovered in the Negev Desert. These jars were in archaeological sites in the south of the country. During a press conference the scientists offered journalists the beer to taste.

Beer with 3000 year old yeast

Researchers found 3000 year old yeast at the bottom of jars. However, this isn’t the oldest yeast that they have come across. In the past they have found 5000 year old yeast! According to the scientists, the beer is made of wheat, yeast and water. At that time there were no preservatives or flavourings.

They did everything to make sure that the taste was exactly like the beer drunk by the Pharoahs. The journalists, who were at the conference and tasted the beer, appreciated the flavour. Aren Maeir, an archaeologist from the Bar-Illan university, said humourously “Either it will all go well or we’ll all be dead within five minutes. We survived and are here to tell the tale.”

You can see the presentation of the beer in the video below. The head colour of the beer make one want to taste it just like the journalists present at the media event did.

The Israeli researchers, who made this discovery hope to be able to market this 3000 year old beer some day. So with ancient recipes, maybe some day consumers will be able to enjoy this ancestral beer while watching a football match on their smartphone. To be continued…
